Tommy Hilfiger was born in Elmira New York in 1951 and from an early age developed an interest in fashion and design . After high school he went to work in retail earning money to purchase jeans and bell bottom pants which he customized and resold. He opened his first store in 1969 and by 1977 had established a chain of 10 specialty stores in upstate New York.
Until the early 1990s, the market profile for Hilfiger was similar to that of Calvin Klein—middle class, middle aged, white middle Americans, however, that changed as soon as Snoop Doggy Dog appeared wearing a Tommy Hilfiger shirt on Saturday Night Live in 1994. Hilfiger quickly began to design baggier, more casual, streetwear style clothes to suit the look of the city hipster.
Tommy Hilfiger launched his first cologne, Tommy for Men, in 1995 and the perfume equivalent, Tommy Girl in 1996. Other men’s colognes followed such as the playful T, the casual Tommy Jeans, and the modern Tommy 10. Women’s perfumes include the sensual Dreaming, the dazzling True Star as well as Tommy Girl Eau de Prep.
